FREQUENTLY ASKED

Real questions, plain answers.

Everything I wish someone had told me when Bess started slipping and I was trying to keep her in the middle of the family instead of the doorway. If your question isn't here, write me at emma@puddlemat.shop and I'll get back to you within two business days.

What's inside the PuddleMat? +

Five layers, each one there to keep her comfortable and keep her home. Whisper Top, a quiet, soft face that stays dry to the touch and won't startle a nervous senior. The light ClearRead inner liner, which shows a damp patch at a glance, so she never lies on a wet mat and you always know when it's wash day. HushCore, the wicking core underneath that pulls the moisture down and away from her fur. LockSeal Bonded Backing, heat-fused so it won't peel in the wash, rated for 300+ washes. GripFloor Silicone Grid, the base underneath that holds on hardwood, tile, and LVP so it won't slide out from under unsteady legs.

What's actually different between PuddleMat and other reusable pads? +

Four things, in plain language. It stays put: the silicone GripFloor base holds instead of sliding, so it won't skate out from under her on hardwood. It stays dry: the Whisper Top stays dry to the touch while HushCore pulls the wet down and away, so she's comfortable where she lies. It stays quiet: the soft top won't crinkle or startle an old dog. And it lasts: the heat-fused LockSeal backing won't peel apart in your washer, rated for 300+ washes. All of it so she can stay in the middle of the family instead of the doorway.

Sizing

How do I pick a size? +

Small — 24″ × 16″ (60 × 40 cm) for toy and small breeds, crate liners, or a post-surgery corner. Medium — 31″ × 28″ (80 × 70 cm) for most dogs 15 to 60 lbs, and the one most people start with. Large — 35″ × 31″ (90 × 80 cm) for big breeds, seniors with mobility trouble, or beside the bed. Between sizes? Size up. She'll use the extra room. Between use cases, the Medium is the safe first buy.

Will the Medium fit in a crate? +

The Medium is 31″ × 28″ (80 × 70 cm), a good fit for most crates and bedside spots. I sized it for post-op recovery on purpose.

Should I size up if my dog is between sizes? +

Yes. The price difference between sizes is small. The difference in her comfort, having room to settle without hanging off the edge, is not. Senior dogs do better with a bigger pad they don't have to place themselves carefully on.

Care

How often do I wash it? +

For a senior with an accident or two a week, every five to seven days. For daily accidents or hospice care, every day or every other day. It's machine washable and made to last.

What detergent should I use? +

Regular detergent, warm or hot wash. No fabric softener, since it coats the wicking layer and slows absorbency. No bleach, since it weakens the backing over time.

Tumble dry or hang? +

Either. Tumble low is fastest and what I do. Hang drying works and takes six to eight hours. Skip high heat, which shortens the pad's life.

Does it shrink? Does it pill? +

A little shrinkage on the first wash is normal, so pre-wash before you measure it against a crate. Some pile loss and a bit of pilling on the soft top after a year of use is normal too, and it doesn't change how the pad works. By then it has earned the wear.

Shipping

How fast does it ship? +

Shipping is free, and delivery times vary. Most orders arrive within 10 to 20 days. You'll get tracking by email once it's on the way.

How much is shipping? +

Nothing. Every order ships free, no minimum and no threshold. US only for now.

Do you ship internationally? +

The US right now. If you'd like a note when other countries open up, write me at emma@puddlemat.shop.

Senior dogs

Will it help with cognitive decline? +

A dog whose mind is slowing down hesitates and loses footing, and the crinkle of disposable pads makes that worse. The quiet Whisper Top takes the crinkle away so there's nothing to startle her, and the GripFloor base holds steady under unsteady legs. Owners tell me it was a small change that let their dog stay settled in her familiar spot. Your vet is the one to talk to about the bigger picture.

My dog has arthritis. Is the texture comfortable? +

The top is soft, gentler than the rug she's been sleeping on for years. Some owners with arthritic dogs use the Large as a main sleeping spot, not just an accident pad.

How does this work for a hospice setup? +

Keeping her in her familiar spot is the right call. Being moved off to a corner is harder on her than the mess. Put the Large right where she already sleeps, in the middle of the family. The GripFloor base holds it in place under unsteady legs, the Whisper Top stays dry and soft against her so she's comfortable where she lies, and the quiet surface won't startle her. It's built for daily washing, rated for 300+ washes, so it lasts through the stretch that matters most. There's a longer setup guide in the Senior Dog Care hub.

Multi-dog & multi-species

Can two dogs share one pad? +

Two small dogs share a Medium fine. Two bigger dogs do better with their own, less for absorbency than for territory. Most owners keep two anyway, one down and one in the wash.

Does it work for cats? +

Plenty of people use PuddleMat for senior cats. The soft Whisper Top stays dry to the touch and is gentle under old paws, the quiet surface won't startle a skittish cat, and the GripFloor base holds it in place beside the litter box or a favorite sleeping spot. Same comfort, same stay-put grip, same easy wash.

Different-sized dogs at home. What size do I get? +

Get the size that fits the biggest one. The Large works for an 80-lb Lab and an 8-lb terrier both, the small dog just uses less of it. Don't size to the small dog and hope the big one hits it.

Recovery & post-surgery

Does it work after surgery? +

Yes. The things I built for senior dogs turn out to be what post-op needs too. A flat surface with no raised edge to catch a cone, a GripFloor Silicone Grid base that won't slide near a healing wound, and a Whisper Top that stays dry and soft so she rests comfortable while she heals.

Will the cone catch on edges? +

No. The edges sit flush with the floor. The non-slip base is on the underside and the fabric runs to the edge on top. Disposable pads with raised plastic borders are the worst for cone-catching. This one has none.

What about wound water? +

HushCore pulls the wet straight down into the core, not sideways, and the Whisper Top stays dry to the touch. A backing that slips is the usual reason moisture creeps toward a wound, and the GripFloor base keeps this one from slipping.
